Jim, Jake, Josh, Jaleel, Jehosephat, John Jacob Jingleheimer-schmidt

I'm just curious... what possesses people to name all their kids with the exact same initials?

I'm not complaining. I don't think it's stupid, either. I'm just curious.

The Farm Boy's family (all boys) have the exact same initials, first-middle-last, as their father. I just met a woman whose children all have the same initials she does.

I guess I'm curious, because I don't think I'm creative enough to find good names that all have the same first letter. If you're lucky enough to pick something easy like "J," then there are plenty of names.

And don't even get me started on the middle initial. Keeping the middle initial the same for all your kids almost always results in someone getting a middle name which will embarrass them throughout childhood. Plus, how would anyone know whose underwear was whose?!?! Ick.

Okay... if you're only going to have 2 or 3 kids, I guess I can see how that wouldn't be so difficult. But when it starts getting up to 5 or more, yikes! And then there's the famous Dugger family with 16 kids... all with the same first initial. Gah. Pretty soon, you're just making up names or working with some pretty wacky spellings. Admit it.

In my family, all our names start differently. We noted a strange coincidence after my little bro was born... we all had exactly the same number of letters total in our first and middle names. Mom & Dad didn't do that purposefully, though. It just kinda happened.

So, as I said before... I'm just curious. Anyone care to shed some light on the subject?

My brother and I's names both start with the same letter and I just realized the same number of letters. I hated it growing up because we were called each other's names. Which basically ment to my parents which ever one I'm looking at come here. I blame my mother as my dad tells me if he would've won the name battle then we would've had names of different beginnings. Hmmmm...that sheds no light on the subject. I should just go back to sleep.

I'd never get the names right.

melissa: ah, but you made me laugh, and that's all that counts! :-)

goldennib: me either. I'd be like, "Everyone whose name starts with a 'J' needs to stop talking and go to their rooms!" That might work. Hell, MY kids names don't start with the same initial, and I still call them the other one's name. meh.

Matching all three initials actually to me sounds kinda creepy. I'm not even big on naming kids after people in general, though. There are better ways to pay tribute to people I think. And I'm also not into children (especially twins, triplets, etc.) having names that all start with the same letters or names that rhyme. It's not cute. I feel for you, Melissa. I've got friends with kids that pull that crap, and it's not cool. Woah-- I'm a real grump, aren't I?

I'm a little behind, GF... happy 202nd blog post!!

You think that's bad? think of George Foreman and all his kids are named George!!! The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Now that's crazy! He said it was because he was a boxer and was afraid he would forget a name so he named them all after him, thinking that he wouldn't forget his name! Weirdo!
Let's go witht he boxing excuse!

Don't have any sibling so no name matching! And I don't even have a middle name!

My grandfather and all his brothers had names that started with W. My dad and his two sisters have names that start with W. My dad's oldest sister gave her kids names that start with K (but she claims that she didn't choose the names for that reason). My dad's other sister gave her kids names that start with B. My mom put her foot down and said no more. THANK GOODNESS.

I knew a family who had six kids whose names all started with "J" and their last name started with "J".
#1 Son (Jaek to you) named after the movie "Big Jake" with John Wayne (#1's middle name - Wayne). My mother named Baby Son after the youngest character on Eight is Enough.

greg: thanks, greg. And you don't sound like a grump. :-)

stinkypaw: I know!! My guess about George was that he had already been hit in the head too many times, and couldn't think of anything better. Or else he has a huge ego. Hmmm...

-r-: Yay for mom's who are sane! My mom has a very unusual name... it sounds like a chemical compound, so she gave my siblings and me VERY normal names.

mimaw: yeah... too much alliteration for me! No thanks!

ludi: and she wants more. Seriously. More power to her, I guess.

libragirl: Almost every twin I've ever known has had at least the same first initials. My favorite was Melvin and Meshell (that's really how they spelled it). Yeesh!

othur-me: I spent a lot of time making sure my kids' initials didn't embarrass them. My oldest was almost HAH.

Wow! And I thought Holly Wrieth was bad. I can't imagine being named HiHo Silva. I know a woman with that last name... I'll have to ask if she's related. ;-)

I think that it makes it harder to remember an individual child's name if all the children in the family start with the same initial. Maybe our brains work like unorganized biological file cabinets, and names filed under the same letter get lost. However, my husband and I have names that start with M and named our first child, Matthew. Our second son lucked out; he is Luke.

My middle name begins with an S. While my last initial is an R, this does have the potential for an embarrassing set of initials. The sad part is that it was only last year (I'm in my mid-20s) that I realized it. Fortunately, my fiance's last name starts with M, but I couldn't help being a little upset with my parents. What if I had fallen in love with a Smith? I'm too old-fashioned to not take his name....

And my aunt and uncle did the same first initial thing. It always seemed cheesy to me.
